Michael Marmah Martey
Artist
b. 1984 at Gonokrom, a suburb of Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana
He Obtained his first degree in Fine Art (Painting) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST- Kumasi, Ghana and a Certificate in Writing Skills at the Institute of Journalism, Ghana.
His work focuses on the integration of fine art and architecture. His favorite medium is the canvas. By cutting into it and installing multiple superimposed layers, He transforms the “contained architectural pyramid” into a more complex territorial surface. His work activates and redefines existing boundaries. The walls of a built structure, no longer define the enclosed space. Instead, the conventional cube is transformed by the simple act of replacing its innate banality with a cerebral experience that is both unanticipated and immediate.

The most improbable, and in consequence most satisfying, is the successful fusion of the ‘actual’ and the ‘virtual’ into a single object. The juxtaposition of simple negative spaces in bright colours generates intense motion. The creation of places where power can be unearthed without threat, where violence can be contemplative, where rigidity and flexibility can be parallel, where ferocious acts can be redemptive and where an image tenders hope through the very process of its creation.
This is a tentative course to erase marginal lines and to explore conceptions around this matter. An act of replacing innate banality with a cerebral experience that is both unanticipated and immediate.
